These signal faces are novel, as is Cambridge’s wont (and some would say “don’t”). Yes, without an instruction manual, they are confusing. They may or may not have met Federal approval. I’ll make inquiries of my colleagues on the National Committee for Uniform Traffic Control Devices. I suspect that the PH stands for Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon — the kind with flashing red and yellow lights facing the traffic in the street, rather than the usual red-yellow-green. Where in Cambridge are these ped heads (no, I don’t think PH stands for for Ped Head) and are they for a pedestrian hybrid beacon installation?
